Definition

The extraction of valuable minerals or other geological materials from the Earth, usually from an ore body, lode, vein, seam, reef, or placer deposit. These deposits form a mineralized commodity that is of economic interest to the miner. – Wikipedia

CRO Example

An analogy for experiment road mapping and prioritization via balancing big, radical changes with smaller, iterative tweaks. Mining for diamonds equates to a large-scale transformative and/or disruptive test hypothesis. Then, smaller-scale tests that follow-up on insights gained from the big experiment equate to cutting and polishing the diamond, thus bringing out the maximum value. You want to try and strike some kind of balance, like 10-to-1 or 5-to-1; a certain number of “little” experiments for every “big” one.
